PICTURES OF THE WEEK – SPOTTED HYENA

This little Hyena used a pile of dung for a little rest. I hope you are having a restful Sunday as well 😊.

Have a good week and stay safe!

PICTURES OF THE WEEK – IMPALAS

Impalas in the afternoon sun!

Theses medium-sized antelopes are found in eastern and southern Africa.

One of the reasons why they usually look so immaculate is because they have a special dental arrangement on the front lower jaw similar to the tooth-comb. This is used for what is called allogrooming. Individuals are ‘combing’ one another’s fur on the head and the neck to remove parasites.

Have a good week 😊

MAMMAL FRIDAY – WHITE RHINO

A small White Rhino calf and its mum were crossing the savanna in the soft evening light.

Enjoy your weekend!

PICTURES OF THE WEEK – LITTLE TRUNK

This small Elephant calf is in the process of learning how to ‘operate’ its trunk.

For the first six to nine month of their life the Ellie babies do not know what to do with this incredible versatile tool which functions as a hand, a nose, and a drinking cup (not as a straw because they do not drink through their trunk. They just use it to suck water into it and the deposit the water into their mouth).

Enjoy your upcoming week!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK – BIG SOON

“I will be big soon and then you will be afraid of me, just wait …”

This little African Elephant calf displayed all the signs of intimidation to scare me away and got very frustrated when I would not move.

At the encounter on Friday evening the baby’s mum was very calm and looked rather amused on her offsprings behavior 😊

Have a good week!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK – FEVER TREES IN THE MORNING MIST

Seeing Fever Trees (Vachellia xanthophloea) in the morning mist is one of my favorite ‘sightings’ on a summer safari.

These beautiful trees with their unique yellow-green phosphorous bark are prevalent at Thanda. Two beautiful specimina are just outside my home.

In isiZulu the tree is called uMkhanyakude, which means ‘the tree which shines from afar’. What an apt name.

I wish you a good week!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK – LEOPARD

This is my first Leopard picture, which I shot in December 2002. Ned (the name given to this magnificent male) was part of the Munyawana Leopard Project. Wild animals are usually not given any names on game reserves, except if they are part of a research project.

Enjoy your weekend!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK – ELEPHANT BULL

This impressive African Elephant bull followed a breeding herd away from a local waterhole.

In the background is the Intibane Lodge, the home of Ulwazi Research, which is Thanda Safari’s Volunteer Program.

Enjoy your week!

… and as a bonus picture the family group he followed …

Bad news for the bunnies! Great news for Thanda Safari!

This week an additional female Cheetah was released onto the reserve. The young cat, which came to Thanda with a serious leg injury in October, spent four months in a boma (=fenced-in area) to recover.

But she obviously lost none of her skills. Less than an hour after her release she gave a Scrub Hare a run for its money. She almost caught the nimble creature. And on the day after her release she made her first kill and even climbed a tree to mark the occasion of her recovery.

We wish her all the best in her new home and hope she will meet our Cheetah gentlemen, soon.

Catch the Scrub Hare …

Miss the Scrub Hare …

Speed …

Rain on the Savanna …

A short rest …

Careful steps …

That’s it …

PICTURE OF THE WEEK – LIONESS

One of my favorite pictures taken this week: A *Lioness* having an evening drink.

Enjoy your Sunday and have a good week!
