PICTURES OF THE WEEK – SPOTTED HYENA

This little Hyena used a pile of dung for a little rest. I hope you are having a restful Sunday as well 😊.

Have a good week and stay safe!

MAMMAL FRIDAY – ELEPHANT BABY

BIRD WEDNESDAY – BLUE WAXBILL

This is one of my favorite ‘tiny birds’. Blue Waxbills are sometimes called blue-cheeked cordon-bleu or blue-breasted cordon-bleu. They are quite common in Southern Africa.

ECTOTHERM MONDAY – ROCK PYTHON

African Rock Pythons are Africa’s largest snake and one of the six largest snake species in the world. They can grow up to be over 6 meters (20 ft).

This is a collage of pictures of a very young specimen basking in the evening sun on top of a dead tree.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK – IMPALAS

Impalas in the afternoon sun!

Theses medium-sized antelopes are found in eastern and southern Africa.

One of the reasons why they usually look so immaculate is because they have a special dental arrangement on the front lower jaw similar to the tooth-comb. This is used for what is called allogrooming. Individuals are ‘combing’ one another’s fur on the head and the neck to remove parasites.

Have a good week 😊

MAMMAL FRIDAY – WHITE RHINO

A small White Rhino calf and its mum were crossing the savanna in the soft evening light.

Enjoy your weekend!

BIRD WEDNESDAY – EUROPEAN BEE-EATERS

European Bee-eaters breed in southern Europe and in parts of north Africa and western Asia. They are migratory, wintering in Africa. I took the picture of these four last week on Thanda. Soon, they will be leaving for their flight up north.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK – LITTLE TRUNK

This small Elephant calf is in the process of learning how to ‘operate’ its trunk.

For the first six to nine month of their life the Ellie babies do not know what to do with this incredible versatile tool which functions as a hand, a nose, and a drinking cup (not as a straw because they do not drink through their trunk. They just use it to suck water into it and the deposit the water into their mouth).

Enjoy your upcoming week!

MAMMAL FRIDAY – CHEETAH MALES CALLING

We had a great Cheetah sighting this morning. These two males posed on eye-level and starting calling for a near-by female 😊

Have a good weekend!
