panthera PANTHERA – Post on 27 October 2015

‘Pick up your copy of The New York Times today and flip to page A11 to read about a study co-authored by Panthera and published yesterday that unveils new findings on declining lion populations in key regions of Africa.

You can also catch up on the NYTimes article online @ http://nyti.ms/1POYIU4 and read Panthera President Dr. Luke Hunter’s explanation on the far-reaching impact of the catastrophic loss of Africa’s lions: “You start pulling at the threads of these big complicated ecosystems, and they start unraveling.”

An iPhone travel journal – Day 8

Tuesday – German “Wildlife”

I thought a German cow would make a nice “Wildlife” image on one of my travel blog days. My younger brother and I went for a drive into the Black Forest this morning to find a suitable subject. I really like this portrait of a young cow, which I shot on our trip.

For lunch we met up with our parents to eat one of my favorite dishes in a traditional German restaurant: Rehruecken mit Spaetzle, Rotkraut, Preiselbeeren und glasierten Maroni (Rack of venison, small dumplings, red cabbage, cranberries and honey-glazed chestnuts). For desert we had another favorite of mine called ‘meringue glace’ (Vanilla ice cream with freshly whipped cream and very light meringue from the Swiss Emmental).

And after another relaxing afternoon I went for an early dinner (a German sausage salad) with a friend in Bad Saeckingen. In case you think that this trip is a bit of an eating-marathon, then I would say that you are correct – but I enjoy every minute of it 🙂

Monday – A gloomy travel day

Back to Baden-Wuerttemberg. We left Bavaria mid-morning and it took us over six hours to get back home. Long traffic jams around Munich – cars not Elephants this time 🙂 – and a lot of fog along the way made for a longer than usual drive. Now we are back home for a relaxing evening.

I took this picture during the drive – not a very photographic day 😦

Sunday – A Family Day – past and present

Today was a true family day. In the morning we visited an aunt and uncle of mine before we had a family dinner in a traditional Bavarian restaurant. Then we met with two uncles, one aunt, seven cousins and their families on the Catholic cemetery in Teisbach to remember all our dead relatives, of whom most were buried in this place. We then had afternoon coffee  and dinner with the uncles, aunt and cousins before we retired to our hotel for the last night in Bavaria.

On the way to the cemetery I took this picture of a Rapeseed field. I love the colours.

Sunday – Wolpertinger

This morning at breakfast I had an incredible sighting in the Hotel Raeucherhansl, where we are staying during our trip to Bavaria. I got a shot of this rare animal!

Seriously :-), the Wolpertinger is a mythogical hybrid animal in Bavarian folklore, which supposed to inhabit the alpine forests of Bavaria. This specimen was definitely man made and quite scary looking. Bavarian Halloween Special!

Saturday – Home Town Gate
I got around a bit in my life. I was born in Switzerland, grew up in the South of Germany, worked in over 20 and travelled to over 50 countries. But my parents are both from Bavaria. They grew up in the same small village – named Teisbach – where even today a lot of Sperkas still live. Every year on All Saints day (1 November) they visit the graves of their parents and many relatives in the small town. This is a Catholic tradition. Together with my brother, my nieces and one of my nephews I am accompanying them on this year’s visit. We have arrived in Bavaria after five hours of travel. The picture is of an old gate of the village of Teisbach.

Friday – Mixed Summer and Autumn Colours

I had planned only one shot per day, but I really liked the mixed summer and autumn colours in the garden of my parents’ house in the South of Germany. This beautiful mixture will not last much longer, as it gets colder and colder.

Friday – Sunset over Lake Sempach in Switzerland

Today I met with some of my friends from Switzerland in an Italian Restaurant in Zofingen for lunch before I did a photo shoot of the five month old son of very good friends of mine.  In the evening I was invited to a delicious dinner at one of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen. Before the dinner I took this images of a few ducks swimming on Lake Sempach just after the sun had set.

Thursday – Driving trough the Black Forest

Today was a relaxing day. Sleeping in – again – and then to town for a bit of shopping. After another great lunch at my parents’ place and a very quiet afternoon I am having dinner tonight with friends at a Greek restaurant in Bad Saeckingen, Germany.  This picture was taken on my way home from town. I took a bit of a detour through the forest with all its autumn colors.

An iPhone travel journal

I thought for a change I will create a short travel journal of my trip to Europe using one image per day, taken on my iPhone 6 Plus.

Day 1 – Tuesday – A view from a city tram in Basel, Switzerland.
My dad picked me up from Zurich airport in the early morning. After a bit of extra rest from the long flight and a delicious lunch at my parents’ home in Germany I traveled by train to Basel – one of the largest cities in Switzerland – where I meet with friends for dinner. This picture was taken from a city tram on the way from the train station to their house.20151027 - CS6_0000 - E

Day 2 – The Monastery of St.Urban
I slept in this morning – a novel experience after the last few weeks. This trip will turn into a gourmet eating festival :-). After another delicious lunch with friends in Lotzwil, Switzerland I drove to Zofingen, Switzerland, where I lived for eight years. This picture shows the Monastery of St.Urban, which is located on the road from Lotzwil to Zofingen. And for dinner my older brother invited me to a fabulous meal in one of my favorite restaurants in Zofingen – The Federal!
