Native and Invasive!

The African Giant Land Snail (Lissachantina fulica) is native to East Africa, but is an invasive species in many parts of the world, where it has been introduced by humans either as a possible food source, for the pet trade, or just by accident. In these areas it is considered a pest of agriculture and households.

African Giant Land Snails often carry parasitic worms (Angiostrongylus cantinensis), which can cause a very serious form of meningitis.

They are hermaphrodites, which means they have both male and female reproductive organs. But they need a partner to reproduce by cross fertilisation.

Giant Snail Photo Shoot

On my way to Pakamisa’s restaurant I ran into this incredible Giant Snail.

It was a very easy photo shoot with a rather slow but obliging model 😊

ECTOTHERM MONDAY – African Giant Land Snail

Outside its native range it thrives in areas with mild climates. It can cause severe damage to agricultural crops and native plants. This snail is listed as one of the top invasive species in the world.

The African Giant Land Snail is also a simultaneous hermaphrodite (being male and female at the same time). Snails of similar size can transfer sperm both ways when mating (bilateral mating). If the the two mating partners are of different size then the larger specimen acts as female and the smaller as male (unilaterally mating).
