How to take a night sky shot …

A lot of people have asked me about the technical data for this picture. So here they are:

  • The picture was taken last night at 18:20 (6:20pm) at Thanda Safari, 87 minutes before moon rise, facing East.
  • Shooting data: Camera Canon EOS R6 with Lens EF 4.0 17-40L at 17mm. ISO 6400, f4, 10sec exposure, White balance automatic. Camera was set to manual.
  • My game viewer was used as a shooting platform (as I had no tripod with me). The camera was nested in a blanket and I used a 10 second timer to take the picture.
  • Everyone on the vehicle had to sit ‘stock-still’ to ensure a sharp image, especially Bheki 😊
  • Post processing: The picture was edited on an iPhone 14 Pro Max (Exposure +75% Brilliance +50%, Shadow +20%, Brightness +20%, Saturation +25%, Vibrance +15%, Tint -20%. For the image above I used a Silverstone filter.
  • I hope this answers some of the questions!
  • Have a good Thursday.
