NIGHT DRIVES

As a wildlife photographer most of my subjects present themselves at daylight or in the crepuscular hours and the night is therefore not my favorite photo time.

But as a field guide I enjoy the reaction of my guests to the excitement of a night drive under the African star-light sky with sightings of Owls, Nightjars, Thick-knees, Coursers and other non-feathered night creatures.

THE MOON AND THE OWL

It looks like the picture on the right has been photoshopped, but it has not. I took these pictures of a Spotted Eagle Owl under the bright moon yesterday evening. Thanks to two of the birding weekend guests at Pakamisa for holding the spotlights to illuminate the Owl.

NIGHT DRIVE

This Verreaux’s Eagle Owl was very relaxed when I encountered it on a night drive in Kruger National Park. I love the pink eye lids.

Location: H1-5 – On the railing of the bridge over the Olifants’ river.

ORANGE EYES

This is my favorite picture from this afternoon’s game drive. My Thanda Safari Wellness Weekend guests were fascinated by the beautiful orange eyes of this Southern White-faced Owl.

THE EVENING POST – AGITATED

My favorite Owl picture of an Eurasian Eagle Owl being a bit upset 😊.

Enjoy your evening!
