Sunrise over Mkuze

In the last few weeks a few people have asked me if I could also put some of my scenic “non-animal” pictures on the blog.

Even if it is not my focus (I usually target things that can move :-)) I will post a few of my scenic shots over the next few weeks.

So here we go. The first picture is – predictably – from South Africa!

It is a view over the Mkuze Game Reserve, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. The picture was taken from high ground in then north of Phinda Private Game Reserve in the early hours of the morning.

Enjoy it.

  1. Nice picture christian this is rick from Marshal County phot club – I was wondering the exif data for this picture?
Really the exposure – i like the ring and was wondering what F-stop and shutter speed produces these result?
For me it helps me learn the next time i see a sun setting – what settings produced the nice ring around the globe – even if it was what F-stop.
I would have to guess its low light so it was F11; 1/20 second ; with a bactrian camelback histogram (with the contrast and darks and lights in the picture) — and probably way off but its fun to guess if you can find out wht the settings were.
Exposure is complicated and i am trying to get better with exposures

    1. Hello Rick,
This one has a bit unusual settings for a sunrise picture, because my camera was set up for some animal shots I took at the same time (the only value I changed in a hurry was ISO down to 200). I did not use a tripod. The shot was taken hand-held.

      Camera: Canon 1D MII / Lens: Canon L 2.8 28-105mm at 105mm / Mode: AV / Shutter Speed: 1/6400s / Aperture: f/2.8 / ISO: 200 / Exposure Correction +0.0eV / Metering: Central weighted / White balance: AWB / Time: mid morning

  2. Wonderful pic. Seeing this and seeing your wildlife pics. makes for a great combo. Keep up the great work of art.
