Christian Sperka is a wildlife photographer based at Thanda Private Game Reserve, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Over the last 11 years, Christian has traveled the world photographing animals in wild game reserves of South Africa and Namibia, the jungles of Costa Rica, in Yellowstone National Park in the USA, as well as zoos in Europe and the United States. His work has been featured in wildlife magazines, in books and in many zoo publications. He actively supports wild cat conservation, working as a partner photographer for Panthera, the world's leading organization devoted to the conservation of all wild cat species (panthera.org). From 2009 to 2012 he has worked as the official photographer and photography teacher at Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, Tennessee, USA (nashvillezoo.org). Christian is also a qualified South African field guide. He now works as specialist photography guide on Thanda Private Game Reserve in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa (thanda.com).

LOCK DOWN PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI IX

This evenings Safari was a bit quiet. After the recent rain many roads were not drivable and most animals were still in the thick bush.

So I took the opportunity to take a short drone video of the Green Mamba 1 (my Safari vehicle).

Rain, beautiful rain ….

Today was a very rainy day at Thanda Safari.

We are very happy about 40mm of rain, but the Green Mamba (my safari vehicle) did not play in the mud this evening 😊

So there are no game drive pictures just a beautiful bush shot.

LOCK DOWN PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI VIII

It was a true Rhino evening. Just as the sun had set an encounter between Black Rhinos and White Rhinos proofed, that the White Rhinos are the cool dudes.

When the Black Rhino threw a bit of a tantrum and ran straight towards their larger cousins, they did not even move a muscle. A very special sighting of species interaction.

LOCK DOWN PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI VI

My photographic Safari this evening was cut short by a bit of rain, which is very welcome.

But before I returned to Thanda House I took this short video with my iPhone. This is a Leopard Tortoise, one of the Small Five. Can you name the other four. I will post the answer tomorrow afternoon 😊

BIRD WEDNESDAY – CRESTED GUINEA FOWL & WILDLIFE 4 KIDS

Today’s bird is the Crested Guinea Fowl. They live in family groups and often walk behind herds of large animals to collects food which they have left behind. These large ‘bush chickens’ play an important role in the control of ticks and other insects. This is a portrait which I took during one of my Lock Down Safaris.

Today I have launched a page to provide a bit of entertainment to children (and adults) during the Convid-19 crisis lock down in South Africa and all around the world.
