A very special delay!

My favourite Impala images!

As part of our series on sharing interesting facts about our wildlife – including their peculiar habits and down-right bizarre behaviours – this week’s ‘Weird & Wonderful Animal Fact’ is on the Impala antelope.

The name ‘Impala’ come from the Zulu language meaning ‘gazelle’. Female impala can delay giving birth for a month if the weather conditions are harsh and the sex ratio among impala is weighed in favour of the female, with twice as many females born each year.

The picture above shows an Impala mum caring for her new-born. The picture below shows a herd of Impala moving across an open area.

Most of the images I post on Instagram will be different from the ones on my Blog, Facebook and Google+ and usually come with very little text :-).

Enjoy them!

Ignore the car!

20140807 - CS1_6345 - E

Lions normally ignore game drive vehicles, especially when the encounter is on their terms. The Thanda dominant male was passing within touching distance of the vehicle, undisturbed by the humans within the car.

It was not necessary to tell any of the Thanda guests to sit very still and be quiet during this sighting, that was done quite naturally 🙂

What a morning!

Ready for my close-up!

20140912 - CS1_1349 - E

One of Thanda’s largest Elephant bulls was standing still for a few seconds – for his close-up pictures 🙂 – before he moved on down the hill. This gentle giant was trailing the breeding herd which had crossed the road in front of the vehicle on the way to a nearby waterhole. What an experience for the Thanda guests!

On the rough roads again ……

20140918 - CS3_9852 - E

Hurray! The insurance company paid out yesterday and I got my new Toyota Fortuner today 🙂

After my incident with the cow (http://wp.me/P1rzfb-1js) my old car was written off and I drove a small rental VW Polo for the last month. The little car served me well but I could not go all places I wanted to go or needed to go.

That’s over now. I am back in a Fortuner and ready for the rough roads and the rain-season-weather ahead.

But NO cows please 🙂

Thanda Weddings

Please have a browse of our beautiful new Thanda Wedding flipbook which is available to view online.

There’s nothing more magical or more memorable than a new life started in the African wilderness. We have hosted many a magical wedding at Thanda, with each celebration as individual as the bridal couple themselves. In Zulu culture, marriage is seen as a way to build ubuntu – a shared belief in the importance of compassion, humanity and community. It’s for this reason that weddings at Thanda are celebrated with such great spirit and collective passion.
