Keep an eye on danger!

Sometimes herbivores rather keep an eye on carnivores than running away from them. This evening a dazzle of Burchell’s Zebras were keeping an eye on our two dominant male Lions for quite a while before moving off in the opposite directions.

The Zebras never came close enough to trigger the Lions’ hunting/killing instinct, and as these larger cats were still full from a recent kill they were putting no effort into active hunting at this time.

Safe with mom!

This little Lion cub got itself into a cozy and safe position right under its mom.

It and its siblings where most interested in the turning wheels of the Green Mamba (my game drive vehicle) and moved a bit closer every time I moved the car. As soon as I stopped they lost interest and ran after mom.

What a sighting!

Evening back light …

… is ideal for portrait work.

Yesterday evening my gorgeous model – one of Thanda’s dominant males – cooperated well!

Luck?

… often depends on the point of view.

In this case the Zebra was unlucky to be singled out by the Lioness, but it was lucky to escape the attack.

The Lioness was lucky to find some prey to hunt, but she was very unlucky to miss her dinner!

A Penny for Your Thoughts

When I looked at this Lion image this old saying came to mind!

Have a good weekend 😊

THE KING

In the language of the Zulus the words for ‘King’ and for a ‘male Lion’ are one and the same: iNgonyama

Night Drive

It is very exciting when Lions pass a safari vehicle during a night drive.

The cats are used to this passing in the night, but for first time safari guests it is an incredible experience!

The Big Five in one drive!

We went on game drive this afternoon to find Elephants, but we got much more. As we left the Thanda Safari Lodge we encountered two male Lions and when we stopped to watch a few Warthogs and Impalas we spotted a large male Leopard hunting. After this very special encounter we continued on our Elephant quest and almost immediately ran into a White Rhino. And towards the end of the drive we finally found the long-noses.

What a day! The Big Five on one drive.
