MAMMAL FRIDAY – LIONS IN THE RAIN
Yesterday evening Thanda Safari’s male Lion coalition did not enjoy the rain but they still went for a walk to have a look for our neighbor’s male, who decided to roar in the late afternoon.
Nothing motivates a male Lion more to get active, than competition announcing itself to the world.

MAMMAL FRIDAY – SLEEPING LION
Last night I was at the right place at the right time!
I was able to take this ‘fairy tail’ picture of one of our male Lions at one of Thanda Safari’s waterholes.
An hour later the skies opened and we got 50mm of much needed rain.
When I got home I very much resembled a drowned, but happy, rat.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK – AFRICAN LION
The flehmen grimace is a rather comical sight produced by many male mammals. The main organ involved in the grimace is the Jacobson’s (vomeronasal) organ, in the nasal cavity just above the roof of the mouth.
The function of flehmen is to identify reproductive status of a possible sexual partners by ‘analyzing’ pheromones in the air.
To accomplish this the male will inhale a lot of air through the mouth which will then reach the Jacobson’s organ.

Male African Lions spend up to 20 hours a day snoozing, females get up to 18 hours of shuteye. That re-defines the word cat-nap!

A GOPRO INSIDE A LIONS MOUTH!
Hard to belief but my GoPro survived a Lion attack!
Yesterday at Thanda Safari we released two male Lions onto the reserve.
As always I was ready to take picture of the whole procedure.
I had also mounted my GoPro with velcro on top of a plastic box to set it up opposite the boma gate where the Lions would step out into freedom.
This is the most amazing GoPro video and audio footage of one of the two Lions taking my GoPro into his mouth, chewing on it and then demolishing the attached plastic box.
The GoPro survived the ordeal, the plastic box was not so lucky.
And I got the most amazing footage from INSIDE A LIONS MOUTH!
I have added my video frame screen shots at the end of video clip as these amazing images ‘fly by’ rather fast in the video itself.
