The German name for a Hippo is ‘Flusspferd’ which if translated literally mean river horse. But no matter what name they are given I think they are not ideal for riding.
And did you know that the closest living relatives of the Hippopotamidae are aquatic mammals like whales and dolphins? 😊
As I drove back home after a photo lesson this afternoon this beautiful scenery presented itself. A Giraffe family in the foreground and the Lebombo mountains as a backdrop in beautiful winter light. Thanda at its best!
Eugene, a good friend of mine is member of a music band called ROOT. He is currently producing a series of short videos featuring tracks from ROOT’s album ‘Under the Marula Tree’.
The music is composed to symbolize African nature icons (eg sunrises, Lions, Elephants, …). This very special album is available on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer for streaming and download! https://root.hearnow.com/
I gave ROOT permission to use my pictures and videos clips – mostly taken at Thanda Safari – to create music videos.
I really like the first result. And more are in production! Enjoy this African Sunrise 😊
Sometimes it is better to be very quiet and to make not a move. A herd of Cape Buffalo had chased a pride of Lions around and this Lioness went straight up into a tree. The Buffalo could still smell her but not see her.
The herd spent hours around the area and the Lions had to wait in the trees until the Buffalo had departed!
I am sure you have heard of the Big Five (African Lion, Leopard, African Bush Elephant, Black Rhino and Cape Buffalo) and you might have heard of the Small Five (Ant Lion, Leopard Tortoise, Elephant Shrew, Rhino Beetle and Buffalo Weaver).
This is a collage of a more unusual grouping called the Secret Seven. These mammals are very hard to find and are on the sighting wish list of most regular safari goers. I have seen six of the seven – on very rare occasions – in my 20 years of safaris. The only one I have never seen is a Pangolin 😊
PS: The Wednesday bird from this morning was a Martial Eagle
What a beautiful example for the special light during the golden hour. I took this picture yesterday evening just a few minutes before the sun was setting.
It was a long time ago when I took this picture of 15 cute Wild Dog puppies. Whenever we tracked Wild Dogs in the past we could smell them before we could hear them or see them. They are cute, but very smelly 😊
