The Green Mamba and the Spider

Occasionally a Bark Spider decides to span its web across a road. If I see it in time (before driving through it) I always stop and show this fascinating creature and its ‘hunting tool’ to my guests. Once we had a good look I ‘cut’ the anchor line and the base line of the web.

The spider, now hanging with his web material from one tree only, eats up the remaining silk to preserve the protein for its next night’s web-building.

Nature is amazing!

THE FIRST PICTURE

This is the first wildlife picture I took yesterday evening from my new Suzuki Jimny. I will call this small but rugged 4×4 the ‘Little Mamba’ and I will will use it when doing wildlife photo work by myself (all over South Africa).

My ‘Green Mamba’ (a specially converted 2002 Land Rover Defender) will still be used for photo safaris with guests on Thanda Safari and also from time to time on Pakamisa.

NIGHT DRIVES

As a wildlife photographer most of my subjects present themselves at daylight or in the crepuscular hours and the night is therefore not my favorite photo time.

But as a field guide I enjoy the reaction of my guests to the excitement of a night drive under the African star-light sky with sightings of Owls, Nightjars, Thick-knees, Coursers and other non-feathered night creatures.

THAT IS NOT THE WAY YOU HOLD ON TO A LADY!

After a few days of mating the Lion female had enough and wanted to go off hunting. But here mate tried to hold on 😊

INGONYAMA

This is the Zulu word for a male Lion but it also means King . After the recent death of their King and their Queen Regent all my Zulu friends and colleagues are looking forward to the appointment of their new Ingonyama!

I took this short video last night at Thanda Safari.

CHEETAH FAMILY DINNER

I was able to get this footage after the sun had set this evening. A Cheetah Mum had hunted a large Impala ram as dinner for her family.

Please note how observant all them are to avoid to be surprised by another predator during their meal.

QUIET BUT SUCCESSFUL

A day of contradictions.

Beautiful sunny weather. Almost no wind. Hardly any mammals to be seen due to the thick bush. Very few birds at the hides. The quietest day I ever had at Mkuze Game Reserve …

… but a nice Elephant sighting, two very relaxed Rhinos, some stunning scenery and few very colorful birds. What a day!

ON THE SAVANNA

These two Thanda Safari Cheetah males were this evening on the savanna. They kept looking for a female which was also somewhere on the open area (together with her three cubs).

I took this short video after the sun had set with a long 500mm lens.
