STAY-AT-HOME SATURDAY

Being close to Elephants is very special. I know that for many people it is terrifying. That is the reason why I make sure to keep a ‘comfort distance’ when driving with guests on safari.

But I personally do not mind to be close to these gentle giants as long as it is on their terms. Yesterday evening I was watching a breeding herd of Elephants from quite a distance when they decided to change direction and walk straight towards my vehicle. I set up my iPhone to take some video and I kept shooting with my cameras.

This picture is a closeup (taken with a 70mm lens) of an Elephant bull’s skin as he was passing in touching distance. It was exhilarating and calming at the same time to have these huge creators so very close.

I am planning to post some of the video footage this evening, but I thought you might enjoy this special picture!

Stay home and stay safe.

STAY-AT-HOME BIRD WEDNESDAY

What is the group name for Pied Crows?

A murder of Crows 😊 A rather dramatic name for these good looking members of the clean up crew (Pied Crows are mainly scavengers). Have a good bird Wednesday, stay home and stay safe!

STAY-AT-HOME TUESDAY

With many adults performing essential services on Thanda Safari a few young children are on lock down on the reserve with their parents.

When I took little Sambulo and his parents on a game drive the young gentleman tried on my safari hat 😊.

We saw Lions, Rhinos, Buffalo and a lot of general game and he enjoyed the drive very much. But Sambulo was also a bit disappointed with me as I did not show him Elephants.

But as we are locked down until the end of the month I am sure there will be a chance for another drive to track down the Ellies! Stay home and stay safe 😊

LOCK DOWN PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI XXI

https://youtu.be/gFTflcHqTZo

Today I did a single animal safari. I ran into a White Rhino bull who was on a territorial walk and I stayed with him for 2 hours observing his behavior.

This is a 3 minute YouTube video summary with video footage and a few pictures of my afternoon with ‘just’ one Rhino 😊

Have a good evening, stay home and stay safe!

LOCK DOWN PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI XX

Today I had to go on a food shopping town trip and had no time for a game drive.

But I thought you might enjoy this short isiZulu lesson from my tracker Bheki which I recorded a while ago. Bheki and I have been working together for the last 7.5 years and he has been demonstrating the special clicking sounds of the Zulu language (c, x and q) many times to our Thanda Safari guests.

Today he is demonstrating them for you! Since the beginning of the South African National Lock Down Bheki is at home with his family. I miss the game drives with my favorite wing-man!

Have a good evening, stay home and stay safe!
