This is a Cape Buffalo portrait I shot yesterday evening. This bull had mudded his horns to look more impressive and intimidating. I am not sure it worked 😊

After a day in the office I decided to spend an hour before sunset at Mgankla dam. It was very quiet at the waterhole so I decided to listen to an audio book. After about 30 minutes all by myself I heard a slight rumble. It was the start of a large herd of Cape Buffalo arriving for evening drinks.
This is my favorite picture from this evening taken with my iPhone.
Have a good evening.

At this time of the year my favorite trees come into bloom. Weeping Boer-beans (Schotia brachypetala) are called Hhuilboerboon in Afrikaans and uVovovo in isiZulu.
They produce copious amounts of nectar which occasional drips from the tree (Weeping) and the early settlers in South Africa (Boers) roasted the seed beans as coffee replacement, which gives them their name.
In traditionally Zulu medicine the bark of the tree is used to make tee, which apparently is an excellent cure for hangover headaches.
Very distinct with their bright red flowers they attract many bird species which makes them one of birders’ and photographers’ favorite trees.

It is a highlight of any Safari to watch Lion cubs 😊
Have a good week!

I know that you are expecting wildlife picture posts and wildlife video posts but many of my safari guests enjoy my ‘Chocorulas’ during our morning drink stops in the bush very much. So I thought I share the recipe with you. ☕️
1. Put two to three teaspoons of a good quality hot chocolate powder in a mug.
2. Add single or double tots of Amarula and stir the mix until it becomes a fine paste (no lumps).
3. Now add a strong, short espresso (or ristretto) to the mug. If you use Nespresso coffee then the ‘Kazar’ blend will be perfect.
4. Froth some milk (as you would do for a cappuccino)
5. Now pour the froth and a bit of hot milk into your mug.
6. Decorate it with a bit of chocolate or cocoa powder.
Done! Enjoy your Chocorula!
Don’t worry, this will not turn into a cooking channel, Wildlife will be back this evening 😊
Friends of mine from Richards Bay stayed at the Thanda Safari Lodge for the last three days. For their first safari after the National COVID-19 emergency lockdown Bheki and I guided them using my Green Mamba. We had an incredible time.
This is a slide show of some of my favorite pictures from these four exciting game drives. We especially enjoyed all the activity of the Cheetah cubs, the small Lions, and the Elephant calves.
Thanda Safari currently offers excellent rates for South African residents. If you are interested contact reservations@thanda.co.za for more information.

During this morning’s game drive this small Common Duiker had a good look at us through the bushes. Most of the time one only sees the back side of these fast, shy, little creatures.

Imagine you have a bit of an itch on your head and imagine that to give it a good scratch using strong sickle bush spines! You better have a large boss (the horn plate on top of the buffalo’s head) and a really thick skin.
This is a short video of a Cape Buffalo bull attending to such an itch. Have a good day 😊
PS: If you look carefully you recognize a Cape (Glossy) Starling sitting unperturbed in a tree nearby 😊
