THE EVENING POST – WHAT A PITCH!

https://youtu.be/5_rnlXnxMIE

I love the high-pitched sound Cheetahs produce when they are calling one another. This is a short video of a male coalition calling for a female nearby. We were parked right next to them and I was able to get this footage with my iPhone.

I hope you will enjoy your evening!

THE MORNING POST – WET LEO

Walking through wet grass left one of Thanda Safari’s male Lion’s mane looking much darker than it really is.

But whatever the color, he is a handsome animal and he knows it 😊

Enjoy the day!

… and on a historical note …

On 22 May 2004, exactly 16 years ago, His Majesty King Zwelithini Goodwill kaBhekuzulu officially opened Thanda Safari Lodge.

Right now the only visitors at this most beautiful place are our animals, but we are looking forward to welcoming guests again soon, from all over the world!

EYES by Christian Sperka @ Thanda Tented Camp

I love photographing large felines. Seven of my EYES Series Cats Pictures are now on display at Thanda Safari’s Tented Camp. The images look fabulous being printed on very large high quality canvases (the largest are 1.6m x 1.3m).

For more information about my photography or about Thanda Safari just send an email to info@sperka.com!

Bad news for the bunnies! Great news for Thanda Safari!

This week an additional female Cheetah was released onto the reserve. The young cat, which came to Thanda with a serious leg injury in October, spent four months in a boma (=fenced-in area) to recover.

But she obviously lost none of her skills. Less than an hour after her release she gave a Scrub Hare a run for its money. She almost caught the nimble creature. And on the day after her release she made her first kill and even climbed a tree to mark the occasion of her recovery.

We wish her all the best in her new home and hope she will meet our Cheetah gentlemen, soon.

Catch the Scrub Hare …

Miss the Scrub Hare …

Speed …

Rain on the Savanna …

A short rest …

Careful steps …

That’s it …

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – BLUE WILDEBEEST

Yesterday morning I took this video showing a baby Blue Wildebeest – also called Striped Gnu – standing up for the first time and following its mum. This happened only minutes after the birth.

Sorry for the shaky camera work, but I had to hand-hold a 500mm lens to get this footage.

Mother and child were running just ten minutes later. Nature is marvelous!

And, for the last time in 2019: Have a good week!

MAMMAL FRIDAY – ELEPHANTS

On Christmas Day morning I enjoyed the sights and sounds of a herd of African Elephants around a Thanda Safari House waterhole.

I thought you might like this short video.

Enjoy the last weekend of 2019!

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – ELEPHANTS

Midday on Friday a herd of African Elephants rushed past my home to get to the waterhole nearby. I followed them and was treated to a bit of entertainment.

Both Thanda herds met around the water on this very hot summer day. And as usual when two herds join it resulted in quite a bit of harmless chasing and trumpeting. What a show!

I thought you might like this short iPhone video collage.

Enjoy your Sunday and the upcoming Christmas week!

MAMMAL FRIDAY – CHEETAH

A remarkable feature of Cheetahs is their unusually low genetic variability in comparison to other cats.

Individuals are genetically very similarity to one another. It is assumed that this might have resulted from a long period of inbreeding, following a genetic bottleneck during the last ice age.

These pictures of a Cheetah female – watching a two male coalition down the road and meeting them – were taken at Thanda Safari.

Have a good weekend!
